The homeless on our doorstep
Centrepoint work to tackle and prevent youth homelessness. Through a combination of services, they aim to help socially excluded 16-25 year olds on a downward spiral to turn their lives around and progress on to a positive future. Every night of the year more than 600 young people sleep in Centrepoint accommodation services, without which they would face insecure, dangerous accommodation or the terrifying experience of rough sleeping.
- In 2006/7, Centrepoint worked directly with 1,816 young people
- 75% of the young people that they work with are under 21 years of age
- Over 80% of the young people that they see have left home due to 'push factors' - conflicts, family breakdowns, evictions, abuse
Centrepoint's accommodation services range from emergency short stay accommodation to supported flats. These services provide a desperately needed safe environment for a particularly vulnerable age group. Secure accommodation is just the fist step; Centrepoint offer structured support to young people by providing one-to-one help in accessing a range of services, from building confidence and expanding educational opportunities, to improving employment prospects.
