Appleby is one of the most picturesque market towns in northern England. It is renowned for its friendly atmosphere and its delightful small shops offering local crafts and specialities. In June each year, the 300-year-old Appleby Horse Fair is a colourful gathering of travelling people from all over the country, who converge on the town to buy, sell and race horses and ponies. Other festivities include the Rushbearing services still held in the villages of Great Musgrave and Warcop, and the outstanding Jazz and Music Festival held every August.
Nearby Penrith was once the capital of Cumbria. With its central position between the Lake District and the North Pennines, it is easy to see why. Today it is very accessible by road (M6, A6 and A66) and rail.
Penrith is a bustling market town, renowned for its wealth of specialist shops offering an interesting choice of goods and fine foods. Sandstone buildings hide intriguing lanes, yards and alleyways, leading to attractive cottages, gardens and curious little shops. There is a wide choice of excellent pubs, hotels, local and international restaurants and good evening entertainment.
Other 'must see' attractions neary are Brougham Castle, Mayburgh Henge and King Arthur's Round Table. Legend has it that the stone circle "Long Meg and her daughters", close to the village of Little Salkeld is made of the daughters' lovers turned to stone.
