The original period features of the 16th century Bay Tree Hotel, Burford, are still dominant. Oak-panelled public rooms, bare stone walls and original stone fireplaces, including an inglenook fireplace, provide a textured canvas upon which rich fabrics, woven tapestries and antiques have been laid down with exquisite flair.

An oak staircase leads to the bedrooms, each having individual character and decorated in warm traditional colours with fine, often antique, furniture for a true country feel. The bedrooms are all non-smoking and have flat-screen televisions and bathrooms generously stocked with complimentary Molton Brown luxury products.

The award-winning candle-lit Bay Tree Restaurant with its tapestries, flagstone floor and original leaded windows, overlooking the patio and garden, give an elegant, country feel. Here you can relax and enjoy the finest in traditional and modern English cooking prepared from the freshest local produce.

The patio adjacent to the restaurant, provides an alternative venue for the enjoyment of a meal. Alternatively, lighter meals can be enjoyed in the hotel's country-style Woolsack Bar.

The Woolsack Bar at the Bay Tree Hotel and the cosy adjoining hotel library are the ideal places to sink into comfortable armchairs and relax with a newspaper or select a good book to read from the library, take afternoon tea or enjoy coffee & liqueurs in front of the open log fires.

In Summer, enjoy the tranquillity of the secluded walled garden for an evening stroll, or to relax with a refreshing drink or even play a game of croquet. The rose and lavender bushes are especially notable for their perfumes, which mingle as they waft through the garden.

Hotel Heritage & History

The Bay Tree Hotel in Burford has welcomed visitors through its solid oak doors since 1565. The Bay Tree was the country home to Sir Lawrence Tanfield, Chief Baron of the Exchequer to Queen Elizabeth I and a somewhat unpopular figure in the eyes of the local people.

The limestone building dating back to the 16th century, is steeped in history and awash with character, from the foundations of its mellow stone walls - clad with pinkish-purple wisteria blooms - to its wooden beam rafters.

A high rafted hall with galleried stairs, oak-panelled public rooms, bare stone walls and flagstone floors. Original huge stone fireplaces, including the Woolsack Bar with its inglenook fireplace, provide a textured canvas upon which rich fabrics, woven tapestries and antiques have been laid down with exquisite flair.

Several hundred years on and the original period features of the building are still dominant, instilling a unique authenticity of character.

From junction 8 of the M40 follow the A40 to Burford. From junction 11 of the M5 follow the A40. From junction 15 of the M4 follow the A419 and then the A361 to Burford. From the High Street turn into Sheep Street next to the old Market Square.
