High above the Cotswold town of Stroud, sat amidst an expanse of National Trust land, lies the Bear of Rodborough Hotel.
The unique town of Stroud, located where five rivers and streams and their wood valleys converge, has one of the highest concentrations of artists, writers, musicians and craftspeople in Britain, giving it a distinctly bohemian feel. The town has its own Fringe Festival and a Visual Arts Festival, and plays host to a variety of colourful events.
The hilly streets of the town are packed with a diverse array of cafes and an eclectic mix of independent shops. A short drive up a hill or a steep 30 minutes walk will lead you to the rugged beauty of Rodborough Common, owned by the National Trust.
Here you will find the Bear of Rodbourgh Hotel, built some 300 years ago. From its position on Rodborough Common, the Bear commands spectacular views over the region's surrounding hills and valleys. This former coaching inn has been restored to its heritage and period features. The interior has been lavished with rich fabrics and antique furniture.
The bedrooms are all non-smoking with internet access and are located in the original main house and the adjoining Woodchester House. Many have fine views.
Guests will also discover that the excellence of the cuisine and wines served in the hotel's Library Restaurant is hard to beat in the local area. With close links to local producers, the Library Restaurant are able to source the finest in meats, fish, cheese, vegetables and fruit.
The hotel has four conference rooms, the largest seats up to 60 delegates.
All 46 en-suite bedrooms are non-smoking and have TV, tea/coffee making facilities, direct dial telephone, hairdryer, heating control, internet acces, electric shaver point, 24 hour room service, smoke alarms, trouser press and radio. The bedrooms are located in two areas. The original main house has 28 bedrooms and the adjoining Woodchester House has 18 bedrooms. Choose from:
The Bear was originally built over 300 years ago in the 17th century as a coaching inn on the route between London and Gloucester, and a lot of the original stonework can be seen in the hotel; additions and changes were made over the years, most notably, the adjoining Woodchester House extension around 1920 to provide most of the modern accommodation areas, which give the hotel a cheerfully uncoordinated effect on the inside.
This coaching inn has been beautifully restored to embrace and exhibit its heritage and period features. The distinctive image of the reception area is reinforced by the presence of the old stone archway under which the horses once galloped into the courtyard and by the large bell formerly used to summon the inn-keeper.
Strongly influenced by William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement, the interior of the Bear of Rodborough Hotel has been sensitively restored to reflect as much of its history as possible whilst still offering modern comforts, and makes lavish use of rich fabrics and antique furniture and yet more log fires, to create a luxurious but relaxed atmosphere. The imposing oak staircase, with its unusual bell pull chandelier, leads to the bedrooms, each distinctively and comfortably furnished.
