Grange Hotel Overview

Grange-over-Sands is famed for its peace and unspoiled charm as well as its beautiful, mile-long Victorian promenade and myriad of interesting little shops. Small wonder then that Bill Bryson, the feted travel writer, described Grange-over-Sands as one of his six favourite UK destinations.

With its beautiful gardens, fine houses and warm weather, Grange-over-Sands became one of the most fashionable UK resorts during Victorian times when the Grange Hotel in Grange-over-Sands was built. Located at the southern side of the Lake District, the Grange Hotel looks out across the charming, unspoilt town of Grange-over-Sands from its elevated position.

The Grange Hotel, complete with marble floors and chandeliers, is in keeping with its original grand style. Fine terraced gardens, to enjoy a drink in the summer, overlook the town. Many of the rooms have front-facing Bay views, whilst others look out onto a private woodland.

Fine Cumbrian food and Mediterranean-style dishes are served in the elegant Carriages Restaurant, which has French windows looking out across the gardens to Morecambe Bay. Meals are also available in the relaxing surroundings of the Piano Lounge Bar.

Guests of the Grange Hotel have the use of a well-equipped leisure club including heated indoor pool, Jacuzzi and more. There is also a beauty salon, offering a full range of treatments.

The 13th century village of Cartmel is close to the Grange Hotel and both Holker Hall, Gardens & Motor Museum and Levens Hall - with its world-famous topiary gardens - are within 5 miles. Lake Windermere is just a 10-minute drive away.

The Grange Hotel has nine conference, meeting and training rooms, the largest of which seats up to 250 delegates in a theatre-style layout.

      Hotel Heritage & History

Before the Victorian era Grange-over-Sands was a small fishing village that dated back to medieval times. With the arrival of the Furness Railway in 1857 the town was transformed dramatically, becoming a fashionable resort destination for the Victorians and Edwardians - its sheltered position and mild climate being a great attraction.

Grand houses and buildings, many crafted from limestone, were erected to house wealthy merchants and the Victorian gentry that adopted the town as a holiday destination. A mile-long promenade was also established with ornamental gardens along its route from the station to Blawith Point.

The Grange Hotel was built in 1866 in grand Italianate style by the Furness Railway Company, directly opposite the railway station.
