The original Hare and Hounds Hotel dates from the early part of the 18th century and was initially a farmhouse. The main hotel building was added in 1928 and maintains the style of the former inn.

The first trees in Westonbirt Arboretum were planted in 1829 and it was continuously developed by its owners, the Holford family, until its acquisition in 1956 by the Forestry Commission. Next door to The Hare and Hounds is the Beaufort Polo Club. Though in it's present form only nineteen years old, it is really a revival of a hunt polo club, which must have been one of the first if not the first, of the country polo clubs.

From the M5:
Exit the M5 at Junction 13 and follow the signs for Stroud. Pick up the A46 for Tetbury and Westonbirt and follow the signs for the National Arboretum. The Hare and Hounds Hotel is next to the Arboretum.
From the M4 (Junction 17):
Exit the M4 at Junction 17, pick up the A429 and follow it through Malmesbury, heading for Cirencester and Tetbury. Turn left onto the B4014, signposted Tetbury. When you reach Tetbury take the first exit at the roundabout onto the A433, signposted Bath. The Hare and Hounds Hotel is two miles along this road on the right hand side, next to the Arboretum.
From the M4 (Junction 18):
Exit the M4 at Junction 18 and take the A46 to Tomarton, then follow the signs for Tetbury and the National Arboretum. The hotel is next to the Arboretum.
