Langdale Hotel & Spa Overview

Langdale Hotel & Spa is set in the heart of the spectacular Lake District just outside Ambleside - an ever-popular Lake District destination at the head of Lake Windermere. The 35-acre Langdale Estate surrounds the Langdale Hotel & Spa, offering an idyllic woodland haven interspersed with sparkling streams and tarns.

The Langdale Hotel & Spa operated as a gunpowder works in the 19th century and is dotted with massive millstones and other well-preserved reminders of its past. Its original, historic buildings have been restored and converted into luxurious bedrooms, all non-smoking. Some of the hotel bedrooms look out onto the river that runs past the hotel, while others have views of the fells or a woodland setting.

Dining options at the Langdale Hotel Spa include two restaurants, two bars and a traditional Lakeland pub. Choose between the fine dining Purdey's Restaurant with its atmospheric reminders of the Estate's history or the relaxed Terrace Restaurant. There is also the informal Wainwrights Inn - an award-winning traditional Lakeland pub. The emphasis is on using local produce for much of the food.

The excellent leisure club at Langdale Hotel & Spa features a 20-metre heated indoor pool with fine views, a twelve-person spa pool, a state-of-the-art sanarium - combining steam and heat. The Spa therapists offer a wide range of treatments and products. An array of on-site activities are available at Langdale Hotel like mountain bike hire, fitness classes and personal training, tennis, squash and crown green bowls, making it one of the best-equipped facilities of any hotel in the Lake District and beyond.

      Hotel Heritage & History

The Estate began life as a small woollen mill where wool from local flocks was processed on machinery driven by the fast-flowing water of the Great Langdale Beck.

In 1823 a local entrepreneur with an interest in quarrying, saw the potential for the manufacture of gunpowder on the site. The seclusion, natural waterpower and a growing demand from the Lakeland mines & quarries ensured success. Within a few years the Elterwater Gunpowder Works was not only supplying the domestic industry, but also exporting to North America & South Africa.

The powder works closed in 1930, a victim of the depression & the development of more modern explosives, such as dynamite.

A local landowner, recognising the potential of the unique location, bought & developed the site as a holiday resort. By the late 1930's, accommodation consisted of a small hotel, several furnished cottages, dormitories & a guesthouse. There were also a number of rustic sleeping cabins scattered around the idyllic 35-acre Estate.

In 1981, when the Estate came up for sale again, it was bought by a group of local businessmen who established the Langdale Partnership. The idea was to create a high-quality time-ownership resort in an area of outstanding natural beauty, when second homes were in high demand & short supply. 80 Scandinavian-type lodges were carefully sited over an area of 35 acres & the small hotel was converted into a luxury Hotel & Country Club.

Langdale Leisure was sold to Matthew Brown, a northern-based brewing company in 1987, and some months later in 1988 the business was acquired by Scottish & Newcastle Breweries who had bought Matthew Brown. In 1996 Langdale estate was purchased by the Langdale timeshare owners, who thus have effective control of the entire resort, which is professionally managed to their high standards.
