New Wedding Venue...Anvil Hall
Gretna Green's longest established wedding business is adding the well known Anvil Hall in Gretna to its portfolio of venues in the area.
A unique and beautiful building
The Anvil Hall dates back to the turn of the last century; formerly a church this magnificent building was converted especially for weddings.
Civil as well as religious ceremonies take place here. This historic building, set at the heart of the Gretna township is a very special venue. Your walk along the aisle is lit by hundreds of candles, creating a very special and romantic atmosphere, which truly sets Anvil Hall apart from other venues.
The largest capacity wedding venue in the area, the interior of the hall is very grand with an upper balcony allowing for fantastic overhead photography. Anvil Hall provides many great photographic opportunities inside also and although the venue has limited gardens, there are photographic opportunities at the side of the building where there is a kissing gate and 'Gretna Green' sign.
The Anvil Hall has capacity for up to 120 guests seated and an additional 60 standing.
Smiths Hotel opened in 2006 and is part of the Gretna Green Group, owned by the Houston family who have been based at Gretna Green since 1886.
The great grandfather of the current Chairman, Alasdair Houston, bought the Gretna Estate in 1886, which included farming land and the tiny hamlet of Gretna Green. One of the buildings in the hamlet was the blacksmith's workshop, already renowned for its romantic history as a haven for runaway lovers since 1754.
Over the past four generations the Houston family have developed and grown the World Famous Old Blacksmiths Shop at Gretna Green into what is now one of Scotland's premier visitor attractions and important international visitor destination. Famous for its romantic history of runaway weddings, it is to this day, an important wedding venue and where many hundreds of weddings are conducted each year.
The Houston family agricultural roots remain strong and farming is still an important part of what they do here, forming an integrated link between field and table. Smiths Hotel sits in the middle of their farmland that you can see from the hotel. They grow a range of crops and vegetables and run a prize-winning herd of pedigree Charolais cattle.
