Stoke by Nayland Hotel Golf & Spa is set amidst 300 acres of 'Constable Country', in the heart of Suffolk, 7 miles from Sudbury and 10 miles from Colchester. Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf and Spa is located in 300 acres of beautiful Constable Country surrounded by lakes and undulating tree-lined fairways on the Suffolk and Essex border. It is recognised as an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty", and the setting has been captured in the paintings of famous local artists Gainsborough and Constable, after whom the two championship golf courses are named.

The chic, air-conditioned Lakes Restaurant with stunning views across the golf course and lake, is the perfect place to dine. More than half the bedrooms are air-conditioned and a further third have two double beds, whilst others have excellent golf course views. All rooms are non-smoking and have free WiFi, laptop-size safe and en-suite granite bathrooms. There are 9 meeting rooms with free WiFi, the largest suite will seat 450 theatre style.

The Stoke by Nayland Resort has a great Spa with eleven treatment rooms including Rasul & Hammam therapy rooms. The Hotel enjoys secluded tranquillity yet is easily accessible, only 39 miles from Stansted Airport, 45 minutes to the M25, and an hour from London. The port of Harwich and Felixstowe are both 28 miles away. Close by are the renowned local places of interest such as Flatford Mill and Colchester castle, and the beautiful villages of Sudbury, Dedham and Lavenham.

There are 80 rooms in total, 30 are located in the original building and 50 are located in the new wing. All 50 rooms in the new wing are air-conditioned. Among the 30 original rooms, some have excellent golf course views, whilst others have two double beds. All rooms are non-smoking and have flat screen satellite TV, Internet connection point, free WiFi, laptop-size safe, en-suite granite bathroom, power shower, alarm clock, tea & coffee making facilities, express check-out, hairdryer, direct dial telephone, iron & ironing board and key card access.

Hotel Heritage & History

The Peake family have been farming in Suffolk for well over 60 years; from a small 120 acre apple farm, their entrepreneurial skills have developed a thriving and diverse group of companies which have grown to include a hotel, golf, leisure and conferencing business, and fruit growing and processing, on around 900 acres of land. The Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa is part of The Boxford Group, a family-owned business, founded in the 1940's.

Apple growing was always their main activity and over 20 different varieties of apples are still produced today in their orchards surrounding the golf courses and beyond. Other enterprises included dairy farming and cheese production, sheep and turkey rearing, the growing of organic vegetables and wheat - even stone-ground organic flour was produced on site. Bill and Devora Peake were founder members of the Soil Association and together with Lady Eve Balfour they even set up a school for Organic Husbandry on their farm at Boxford.

In 1969, the Peakes decided to diversify into fruit juice production, and Copella farm-pressed English apple juice was born - in the farmhouse kitchen! The name was derived from a combination of Cox's Orange Pippin, the main apple variety used, and the name of the youngest Peake daughter, Carmella.

A year or so after launching Copella, the Peakes decided that they would convert 300 acres of magnificent, undulating Constable Country on the edge of the picturesque Dedham Vale into two 18 hole golf courses with professional help, and were the first farmers in the UK to diversify into golf with the Stoke by Nayland Golf Club. The Gainsborough Course was built in 1972 followed by the Constable Course in 1979.

With conservation always a priority, the Peakes planted 60,000 trees, which now line the fairways and form many areas of indigenous woodland. There are also natural and man-made ponds and streams, together with four large lakes which all serve to enhance the overall beauty of the courses.

Sir John Harvey-Jones brought the Peake family business into the spotlight in three of his BBC Documentary Series "Troubleshooter" in 1989, 1992 and 1999, and he formally opened the new Hotel, Conference Centre and Spa in his last programme. He advised the family about their various enterprises including "Copella" Apple Juice, Stoke by Nayland Golf Club, Boxford Suffolk Farms and "Peake Fruit", their fruit storage, packing and marketing company.

In 1996, in recognition of her lifetime's work, Devora Peake was awarded the MBE for services to the Fruit and Fruit Juice Industries and she was made a fellow of the Royal Agricultural Society.

After the family sold the Copella Fruit Juice brand to Tropicana UK in 1998 they embarked on a major expansion programme, creating a 30 bedroom hotel, a conference and banqueting centre for up to 450 guests, and a health and fitness complex.

Bill Peake died in 1979 and Devora Peake in 1999, but their three daughters, son and grandson, who have been working in the family business for a number of years, are now running the Group and its subsidiaries.

In 2004 Peake Fitness and Spa was further extended to include a large air-conditioned aerobics studio, exotic Rasul and Hammam therapy rooms as well as more new treatment rooms, and a spacious relaxation area by the pool. In addition new private terrace areas were added to the Devora Suite and Constable Rooms.

In 2007 a further 50 air-conditioned bedrooms were created making a total of 80, as well as a new restaurant, glass-fronted Golfers' Bar and Gallery Lounge with 270 degrees panoramic views, Pippin retail shop, new changing rooms and Pro Shop.

The hotel is now established as a popular venue for leisure, spa and golf breaks; corporate events and private functions. It is also regularly used by football teams when they visit the region. An array of signed shirts from top Premiership clubs is proudly displayed in the hotel foyer.

The challenging golf courses are now well established and have earned the reputation of being among the finest in East Anglia, regularly hosting National and Regional Events and Pro-Ams.

How to find us

By Road

From M25 motorway (London) - Leave the M25 at junction 28 (Brentwood), and join the A12 signposted to Colchester. Exit the A12 at the Colchester Central turn-off, picking up the A134 signposted to Sudbury. The distance from the A12 turn-off to the club is approximately 8 miles. Once on the A134, pass through the village of Nayland, ignoring any signage to Stoke-By-Nayland. Once in Leavenheath (still on the A134), pass the Hare and Hounds Public House on the right hand side, and continue a further 200 yards turning right on to the B1068. This is signposted Stoke by Nayland and Stoke by Nayland Golf Club. Proceed along the B1068 for approximately 1.5 miles, and the club is located, and signposted on the right hand side.

From Norwich - Leave Norwich on the A140 and join the A14 in the direction of lpswich. Join A12 in London direction. After approximately 5 miles, take the B1068 signposted Higham and Stoke by Nayland (this is a right turn via a filter across the dual carriageway). Continue along the B1068 passing through the village of Stoke by Nayland. The Stoke by Nayland Club is situated on the left hand side, approximately one mile from the village, towards Leavenheath.

From M1/ M6 (Midlands and Cambridge) - Join the A14 at the M1 / M6 junction and travel eastwards towards Cambridge. Continue on the A14 past Newmarket to Bury St Edmunds and exit the A14 at the third exit for Bury St Edmunds signposted A134 Bury St Edmunds / Sudbury. Travel south to Sudbury and remain on the A134 in the Direction of Colchester. Pass through the village of Newton Green and upon reaching the village sign for Leavenheath, turn left onto the B1068 to Stoke by Nayland (also signed for The Stoke by Nayland Club). After approximately 1.5 miles the Club is located on the right.
