19th century craftsman, designer and writer, William Morris, crowned Bibury 'the prettiest village in England'. Today, this picturesque Cotswold hamlet continues to evoke such reactions. In the heart of Bibury sits the Swan Hotel, overlooking the River Coln and the arched stone bridge that crosses its shallow waters. Originally built as a row of riverside cottages, the Swan has become renowned as an excellent country hotel, serving superb cuisine.
We have ten delightful hotels in the Cotswolds to choose from. If for any reason you are unable to book your chosen dates for the Swan online, please call our reservations team on 0845 0 70 70 90, who will be delighted to assist you with your booking.
Picture a tiny olde worlde village of stone cottages, nestling on the tree-lined banks of a clear river, silently surveying as it lazily winds its way between gently rolling hills and wooded valleys. If this scenic setting is how you would imagine the perfect English rural idyll, then Bibury is it. The pretty little village, with its Saxon church dating back to the 8th century and its one hundred year old trout farm, is a stunning beauty spot untainted by the intrusions of modern architecture.
Cross to the opposite banks of the river and you'll discover yet more delights. A line of weaver's cottages with steep pitched roofs, converted from a wool store in the 17th century, make up one of the most photographed attractions in the Cotswolds - Arlington Row. Arlington is also the home to an old corn and cloth mill - now an agricultural museum - which retains a working water wheel. From either bank, the midstream watermeadow of Rack Isle is sight to behold and it provides a vital habitat and breeding ground for the river's diverse wildlife.
At the heart of this whimsical scene lies the ivy clad Swan Hotel, an establishment renowned for its outstanding hospitality, delicious cuisine and romantic setting. Each of the bedrooms at the hotel has been styled individually and the snug, inviting lounges with their log fires offer guests a cosy retreat in the winter months. On a sunny, summer's day the sun-drenched patio offers the perfect place to relax and enjoy a ice-cold drink. At any time of year the many attractions and the sheer beauty of the Cotswolds ensure that any visit is bound to be a highly memorable one.
The Swan Hotel is noted for its superb decor. All 22 bedrooms are individually decorated with private en-suite bathroom and Molton Brown toiletries, remote control colour television, tea/coffee making facilities, direct dial telephone, hairdryer, heating control, internet access, electric shaver point, radio and trouser press. Vibrant colours, rich fabrics and tastefully selected antique furniture give a real sensation of luxury. All rooms are non-smoking and are generously stocked with Molton Brown toiletries.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Bibury prospered due to the wool trade, and it is during that time that many of the stone cottages were built, together with the Swan Hotel and the bridge over the Coln.
Also at this time the Manor Court was held at the Swan and not far from the hotel can be found the village lock-up a small octagonal stone building.
Most of the Swan Hotel as we see it today was completed in the 19th Century.
