Delicious food is served in the hotel restaurant which has been awarded an AA Rosette for its high standard of cuisine.

The hotel building has an interesting history and it retains many of its beautiful period architectural features - legend has it that Mary Queen of Scots stayed here whilst in the custody of the Earl of Shrewsbury. It occupies three sides of a large square which once formed a paved courtyard, closed off by palisades to the front. The ivy covered pillars of the central gateway are still evident at the end of the lawn.

Weddings

Couples have the choice of three rooms at Whitley Hall Hotel for civil weddings or civil partnerships. The Whitley Suite, a charming room with access to the garden, is the largest and can accommodate up to 100 guests. The Parker Room can seat between 60 and 80 guests.

The smaller rooms are ideal for more intimate receptions and ceremonies. The Picture Room is a characterful wood-panelled room featuring an original ceiling that was reputedly commissioned by Mary Queen of Scots. It can seat small parties of up to 12 guests. On the first floor, with views of the grounds, is The Wordsworth Room which is suitable for up to 20 guests. For larger events it is also possible to have exclusive use of the hotel for the duration of your wedding day.

The hotel offers an extensive selection of menus and has a well-stocked bar. The mature hotel garden and grounds provide a picturesque and romantic backdrop for beautiful wedding photographs and the hotel features an impressive bridal suite.

Hotel Heritage & History

Legend has it that the ill-fated Mary Queen of Scots stayed here at Whitley Hall while she was in the custody of the Earl of Shrewsbury at Sheffield Castle. Rooms in the west wing are those she is said to have occupied. Similar folklore tells of a secret passage that linked Whitley Hall with Ecclesfield Church, which is situated approximately half a mile away across the fields. The present church building can be traced back as far as the 15th century, although a priory was built on or near the site around 1076. The village of Ecclesfield is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The grave of Lord Nelson's chaplain is to be found in the churchyard. The village's original stocks disappeared overnight around 1640 but replica ones were placed near their original site in the 1970's.

From the M1:
Exit the M1 at Junction 35. At the roundabout take the A629, signposted Chapeltown. At the next roundabout take the first exit onto the A6135, signposted Sheffield. After approx. 1 mile turn right onto the B6087 (Church Street) then turn right onto Whitley Lane. After half a mile turn right onto Elliot Lane. The hotel is approx. 300 metres along this road.
