Hidcote Manor benefits from a new lease of life

There are a number of surprises in store for people staying at hotels near Hidcote Manor this summer, as the attraction reveals its restoration work.

A total of £3.5 million was invested in the Gloucestershire attraction, with donations up to £1.6 million made to the National Trust matched by an anonymous source.

Visitors can see the newly restored semi-tropical plant house and a summerhouse mural, as well as a bathing pool, which have all benefited from the cash.

The gardens were originally designed by horticulturalist Major Lawrence Johnston, with his initial designs taken into account when constructing the new features.

Head gardener at Hidcote Glyn Jones said: "Visitors will be able to imagine Johnston and his guests enjoying the gardens, tennis courts and bathing pool back in the 1920s, 30s and 40s as they wander around."

The work took a decade to complete and spanned over ten acres of land.
