Lake District economy to be boosted through new exhibition centre

The Lake District looks likely to benefit from the construction of a 'world-class visitor destination' with plans for a convention and exhibition centre set to get the go-ahead.

It will be built opposite the A591 on the shores of Lake Windermere and will be capable of holding 600 delegates.

The region's economy is likely to be boosted with businesses from around the UK able to hold events at the centre, while some may choose to explore what options exist for fine dining in the Lake District during their stay.

The project will cost in the region of £4 million and will create 35 new jobs. A host of green features will be included in the building, in keeping with the local countryside.

A ground source heat pump is one of the technologies which will be utilised, powered by hydro-electricity.

Derek Armstrong, chair of Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, said that the Lake District will be able to welcome more visitors from the likes of Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham.

He told the Westmorland Gazette: "It's a good idea and would get more businesses coming to view Cumbria. You never know what these things are going to lead to. Businesses could come up, see what a good place it is and build a factory somewhere."

A report to Lake District planners, read: "The proposed building has been designed to be a standalone and iconic landmark complementing its location in the heart of the lakes."

It was also confirmed that the scheme's architect has given "strong visual references to the building's context and location, maximisation of the views to the lakes and high fells beyond and use of the best, modern, environmentally-friendly techniques of construction".

The application is being supported by Cumbria Tourism, which is looking forward to welcoming more people to the region.

It noted that the Windermere Waterfront Scheme will improve the quality of facilities and infrastructure that the Lake District has to offer and allows it to stand toe-to-toe with competitors.
