The Great Picture on show at Abbot Hall Art Gallery

When looking through the selection of hotel and spa breaks available across the UK, people will be looking to stay in an area that is both relaxing and full of things to do.

This is why the Lake District has become such a popular choice for tourists across the country, who have been drawn to the region because of its spectacular scenery and calm, soothing aura.

Whether people wish to lead a proactive holiday or simply relax, the area has much to offer.

Firstly, its landscape is one of the UK's most visually appealing, with mountains, lakes and greenery combining to present visitors with some truly unforgettable sights.

Tourists can choose to explore the scenery by embarking on one of the many walking routes on offer, which are varied to suit a range of different abilities.

Once visitors have experienced the Lake District's glorious landscape, they can look forward to enjoying some fantastic art at the Abbot Hall Art Gallery, where The Great Picture presents an unmissable opportunity to see some truly historic work.

Commissioned by Lady Anne Clifford in 1646, the three-sectioned triptych looks at her family's history, with scenes from the past translated to portraiture, text and symbolism.

The Great Picture hung in Appleby Castle for more than 300 years and its creator has been deemed to be Jan van Belcamp, a Dutch artist in England during the 1600s.

However, it is believed that the work's inscriptions belong to a different person, making the history of the portrait both mysterious and fascinating.

The piece is split into three panels, with the left side depicting Lady Anne Clifford at the age of 15, while the right side section explores her life in late middle age.

On the other hand, the central panel focuses on Lady Anne's parents, Margaret Russell and George Clifford.

Each of the sections provide intriguing insights into the family's decorated past, meaning that a visit to the Abbot Hall could be the perfect way to complement a trip to the excellent Lake District region.
