Luxury hotels in Yorkshire benefit from overseas visitors in search of great scenery, a VisitBritain poll has revealed.

Surveying the habits of overseas tourists, the organisation found that 55 per cent of those who head to Yorkshire did so for its rural areas, making it the highest proportion in the UK.

Almost two-thirds (60 per cent) of those surveyed sampled local pubs in the county, while one in three (29 per cent) took part in a sporting event.

On a national scale, eating at restaurants polled favourably with visitors, as this was a top activity for 79 per cent of those surveyed.

Patricia Yates, director of strategy and communications at VisitBritain, said: "This is particularly great to see in a year which saw our restaurants winning more Michelin stars in 2010 than at any other time in the 35-year history of the gastronomic award."

The organisation recently predicted that visitors from emerging nations would be drawn to the UK by next year's royal wedding.
