Defining the skyline of the medieval city of Durham is its world-famous cathedral, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, unique in retaining almost all of its Norman craftsmanship. Durham Cathedral’s origins date back to the first millennium, with the current building started in 1093. There are world-firsts for architecture to marvel at, stunning stain glass, intact surviving monastic buildings, the Shrine of St Cuthbert and the spectacular medieval vaulted undercroft. The city’s Norman castle shares the Cathedral’s World Heritage Site.
