Described by the Standing Commission on Museums & Galleries in 1968 as “one of the greatest art collections of the nation and a monument of the first importance,” the Fitzwilliam Museum is widely regarded as one of the finest small museums in Europe. Owned by the University of Cambridge, collections at this art and antiquities museum include artefacts from Ancient Egypt, Medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, and paintings (many masterpieces) from the 13th Century to the present day.
