The tallest Tudor gatehouse in Britain, Layer Marney Tower was built by Henry 1st Lord Marney in the reign of Henry VIII. A statement building, the Tudor palace is a rare combination of Italian terracotta decoration and diaper patterned brick work. Visitors can take in magnificent views out across the Blackwater River from the top of the tower (99 steps) and take a stroll through the Grade II listed gardens, including a Tudor-style knot garden. There is also the opportunity to feed the animals at the farm.
