As one of the most important wildlife sites in Europe and beautiful stretches of coastline in the UK, walking (take the 9-mile trek from Arnside to Kents Bank), cycling and birdwatching should be emblazoned on your agenda (check tides and take a tour with an official guide). The largest intertidal estuary in the UK, over 250,000 waders, wildfowl, and gulls winter, breed or pass through Morecambe Bay each year. A mosaic of habitats, supporting rare flora and fauna, Morecambe Bay is to birds what Clapham Junction is to commuters. One hundred metres from the Netherwood Hotel is Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Brown Robin Nature Reserve – a mix of woodland and grassland inhabited by roe deer, treecreeper, nuthatch, woodpecker and shelduck. Keep your eyes peeled for wax cap fungi and yellow meadow ants, too. If the thought of a cross-bay 9-mile trek or a 3-mile circuit (returning through Brown Robin) sounds exhausting, then, enjoy a relaxing walk along Grange’s seafront promenade a couple of hours before high tide and watch thousands of oystercatchers paint the sky with their neon bills.
