Raby Castle is one of England’s finest medieval castles and one of the best-preserved castles in the North East of England. Surrounded by 200 acres of magnificent deer park – with a further 5 acres of 18th Century ornamental walled gardens – when you’re done taking the air, you can discover the castle’s lavish interiors and exemplary architectural styles. Ascending the grand staircase, admire paintings by Giordano and Veronese; family portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds and Sir Francis Grant can be found gracing the walls. The dramatic entrance hall, chapel and barons’ hall serve as bold examples of the Gothic Revival architectural movement. Of particular note is the striking octagon drawing room with its rich textiles, paintwork, mouldings and gilding.
