The Prince Rupert Hotel is situated right in the heart of this historic county town, surrounded by a maze of cobblestone streets and Tudor buildings. It was once home to Prince Rupert, the grandson of King James I, and is today one of the finest hotels in Shrewsbury.
The Prince Rupert Hotel’s principal restaurant is marinated in medieval personality and its bistro is housed in one of the town’s historic Tudor buildings. The hotel’s splendid tea rooms offer an extensive menu and specialist Suki Teas are served in a Japanese tea pot.
Bedrooms include 12th Century, mansion house and 15th Century, Tudor-beamed suites, with the luxurious Prince Rupert Suite offering a king-sized, four-poster bed and an oak-panelled bathroom with a Victorian roll-top bath.
The character of the building remains intact and, under the guidance of English Heritage, the original mansion house, dating back to 1150, has been carefully restored and extended. Period features include a magnificent Jacobean staircase and Shrewsbury’s only stone-vaulted cellar.

Dining is of the utmost importance at the Prince Rupert Hotel and this is reflected in its flagship Royalist Restaurant. A staunch supporter of the monarchy, the oak-panelled Royalist Restaurant is steeped in medieval character; from its inglenook fireplace, to its original tapestries and splendid suits of armour. Guests can choose from a superb à la carte menu complemented by a list over 40 wines and champagnes, with half bottles available. Wines are supplied by award-winning Tanners Wines, a family-run, independent wine merchant with its headquarters in Shrewsbury. Vegetarians are well catered for and can savour one of the restaurant’s signature dishes, Shropshire Blue: warm Shropshire blue croutons, frizza leaf, mapled walnuts, port dressing and apple.
Please reserve a table for dinner in advance.
Chambers Bistro takes its name from British law, but we would be surprised if a barrister’s room was ever so welcoming – oak panelled walls, exposed beams, leather sofas and an open fire. A traditional English-style menu with a great choice of meats and fish, and a real focus on locally sourced, seasonal produce, is complemented by a fine selection of wines - by the glass or bottle - from the bar. Situated adjacent to the Prince Rupert Hotel, Chambers is housed in one of Shrewsbury’s 15th Century Tudor buildings.
Camellias Tea Rooms offer a deviant afternoon tea for two or a light lunch in a stylish setting, with oak panelling, black granite tables and bulbous chandeliers. Original photographs of Shrewsbury adorn the walls and music from the Roland grand piano frames a truly charming dining experience. An extensive menu offers a wide selection of traditional cakes, loaves and slices, as well as specials of the day including delicious cheesecakes and meringue roulades. Hot and cold drinks include specialist Suki Tea served in a Japanese tea pot and a divine hot chocolate with ample toppings of fresh cream, marshmallows and Maltesers. Situated directly opposite the heritage gardens of the 12th Century St. Alkmund’s Church, guests can gaze out of Georgian windows onto St. Alkmund’s Square and the Tudor Bear Steps.
Don’t miss the opportunity to indulge in afternoon tea whilst staying in this glorious setting – savour homemade scones with fruit preserve and cream, sandwiches, cakes and a pot of tea. Both traditional afternoon tea and champagne afternoon tea are available to order and can be enjoyed in the Royalist lounge. Afternoon tea can be booked in advance, at a special price, when booking your room via classicbritishhotels.com.
