York. The ancient capital of England. A city steeped in history. With the Roman-walled centre of York offering more attractions per square mile than any other destination in the UK, there is no shortage of things to see and do; from the iconic York Minster, Clifford’s Tower, Fairfax House and Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, to JORVIK Viking Centre, The York Dungeon, the National Railway Museum and York Castle Museum. Shop in the Shambles, with beautiful timber-framed buildings and cobbled streets, and explore the legends beneath York’s ancient streets with a spine-chilling ghost walk.

York Minster is a masterpiece of stained glass and Gothic architecture where visitors can delve into over 2,000 years of history. There are daily guided tours taking in the Minster’s stunning stained glass, including the Great East Window and the Five Sisters, and its hidden treasures. Other highlights include the Undercroft, a series of interactive underground chambers, and the Orb, an elliptical treasure house of stained glass.

Castle Howard, one of the world’s grandest Baroque mansions, lies 15 miles north-east of York. This Grade I listed stately home is set amid 1,000 acres of breathtaking landscape, in the Howardian Hills. Designed in the Baroque style by Sir John Vanbrugh and Nicholas Hawksmoor, who also collaborated on Blenheim Palace, a Palladian wing was later added by Sir Thomas Robinson. Castle Howard houses a world-famous collection of art and antiques.
