York comes top of best of British poll
People are keen to stay at North Yorkshire hotels to visit the historic city of York, the results of a new survey would suggest.
Rough Guides asked its readers to name their favourite small town or city, and York came out on the top of the list.
More than 200 British areas were identified by the 1,491 respondents, with York gaining five per cent of the total vote.
"When people think of British cities it’s natural to think of London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Liverpool and the like, but our smaller cities and towns have an awful lot to offer," a Rough Guides spokesperson commented.
In addition, a good mix of locations made the top ten, as people voted for traditional seaside destinations such as Blackpool and Whitby, alongside historical locations like Stratford Upon Avon, according to the travel guide firm.
Also featuring in the rundown were the likes of Bath, Brighton, Keswick and Chester.
