Venture back nearly fourteen centuries with a visit to this ancient church, the seat of the Bishop of Leeds. Ripon Cathedral was founded by Saint Wilfrid in 672 AD and the ancient Saxon crypt still survives to this day and has remained in continuous use. Also of interest are the ornate medieval carvings which decorate the choir stalls, its intricately carved gargoyles and grotesques and Sir Ninian Comper’s reredos, a magnificent World War I memorial.
