Founded in 1083 as a Benedictine monastery by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, over the years Shrewsbury Abbey established itself as one of the most important abbeys in England. Despite the Abbey being destroyed in the 16th Century, following the Dissolution of the Monasteries during the reign of King Henry VIII, much of the original Norman building survived and can be seen in the eastern half of the nave.
