Handsome manor house complete with converted Bedford horseboxes and superb views across the Wye Valley.

You've arrived at the gateway to Middle Earth. Of magical meanders and fabled forests.
Here is a place to stop and stand in awe

It’s undeniable isn’t it? That sense of ease and adventure. It washes over you as you slide down a gear and coast up the driveway. A sweep of gorgeous green. A striking facade of white. This is the Wye Valley you’re in, an area of outstanding natural beauty, with acres of National Trust parkland nearby. And this is Brooks Country House, a Georgian classic. Its quiet confidence to be enjoyed in the well-poured pint and the rugged leather armchair. There is no shortage of artefacts and artwork here. Bedrooms (3, 4 and 6 are our favourites) are similarly singular – antique furniture, working fireplaces and silvery Cole and Son hand-block-printed wallpaper.

You’ve spotted the walled garden with heated outdoor pool (June-September). You’ll want to abscond to its Swedish barrel sauna then or wood-fired hot tub (a safe bet, we know). A games room and three converted vintage horseboxes cater to families, as do the 15 acres of grounds. But if you’re travelling duo (or solo), then perhaps a chilled glass of Pengethley Estate white wine, produced from Brooks’ own two-acre vineyard (tours in the summer), will amply cut the country mustard, whole-grain and all. Welcome to the club. Vibes of repose included as standard. Intoxicating, isn’t it? Undeniably.

Food & Drink

The Restaurant

Housed in the former library, to its credit the wood-floored restaurant certainly has none of its formality. It counts Georgian bookshelves, paintings by the owners' grandmother (who studied with Sir Henry Moore no less) and countryside vistas (daylight floods through floor-to-ceiling bay windows) amongst its many charms. On the dinner menu there is a choice of starters, main courses and puddings. To finish, the head chef's award-winning apple pie with crème Anglaise is our pick. Dishes such as succulent Herefordshire steak (with trimmings of course) emphasise the importance placed on local, artisan suppliers and producers. Produce comes from Pengethley Farm Shop, next door, while eggs come from Brooks' own 40 hens. Talking of eggs, there's the morning's full fry Englishes, a prerequisite to any country walk or window-shopping.
