The highest rated hotel in Mid Wales, located in the heart of the historic spa town of Llandrindod Wells, the Metropole offers the perfect base for exploring the nearby Elan Valley – an area of spectacular beauty known as the ‘Welsh Lake District’ – and the attractions of Mid Wales. Run by the same family since the reign of Queen Victoria, guests are assured a warm welcome.

At the Metropole Hotel, food and drink is some of the finest in the area. Guests can choose from two dining options: The Radnor and Miles Restaurant, where modern British cuisine is prepared from fresh, local ingredients, and Spencer’s Bar and Brasserie, a more relaxed alternative offering full lunch and evening menus.

The hotel features a health club and the Rock Spa, which includes a stunning 18-metre indoor pool, an air-conditioned gymnasium and five holistic treatment suites, located in its charming Victorian-style conservatory. In addition to its leisure facilities and games room, the Metropole Hotel can arrange a variety of outdoor activities, including golf, fishing, pony trekking and boating.

Mid-Wales is a wild part of Britain. Countless lanes wind over rolling hills and along verdant valleys, there is little traffic and spectacular upland scenery – all of which makes it ideal cycling country. The Radnor Ring cycle route is an 84-mile loop that links the small towns of Llandrindod Wells, Presteigne and Knighton. The Metropole Hotel is a 2-minute walk from the National Cycle Museum.

Dining at Radnor & Miles Restaurant at the Metropole Hotel

Radnor & Miles Restaurant

Beautifully presented dishes are served in elegant surrounds, on white linen-clad tables with high-backed leather chairs. Regional Welsh flavours can be found throughout the modern British menu, with plenty of venison and wild game, seafood from the Welsh coastline, tender Welsh black beef and mountain lamb from local farmers, and even cepes and chanterelles from a nearby forest. Extravagantly begin with a pressing of Gressingham duck and foie gras with apples and sloe gin, before moving on to Welsh ham hock pot-au-feu with cassoulet. And, for dessert, try rhubarb from the Metropole's garden, or give in to a Penderyn whiskey brûlée with biscotti. The head chef's gourmet six-course taster menu will satisfy even the most discerning foodie. The Radnor and Miles Restaurant is renowned for the quality of its cuisine and the head chef is a member of the Welsh National Culinary Team. Experience Welsh fine dining at its best...

For a main, try rib eye of Welsh black beef, braised shank of Nantmel lamb with roasted shallots, or traditional Welsh steak and kidney pie. Round it off with apple and blackberry crumble served with creamy custard. As you can see from the menu, there is an emphasis on supporting local food producers and farmers.

Golf Courses

Llandrindod Wells Golf Club (off-site)

When it's time to tee off, guests of the Metropole Hotel are offered preferential rates at Llandrindod Wells Golf Club, just half a mile away, with its turf banks, natural hazards and well-protected greens rated amongst some of the best in Wales. The 18-hole course was designed by six times open champion Harry Vardon, then later altered by James Braid. Each tee demands a different tactic, with out of bounds on eight holes and blind shots often leading to double bogies. Golf rarely offers such spectacular views, with the first tee looking down across the Victorian spa town of Llandrindod Wells and the neighbouring valleys. Overhead, buzzards and red kites steal through the sky.

Places to Visit

Elan Valley -

Fondly known as the ‘Welsh Lake District,’ the Elan Valley is an area of 72 square miles of historic landscapes, an internationally important wildlife site. The chain of man-made lakes – dams and reservoirs – are a feat of Victorian engineering and were built to supply much needed clean water to Birmingham. Today, they add to the spectacular landscape, creating and safeguarding natural habitats. The visitor centre, below Caban Coch dam, is a good place to start your adventure, and you can discover hidden secrets of the valley with a bespoke ranger tour.
