Fairy-tale and imposing in equal measure. Think stately home with spa in a lush Walian landscape.

You're staying in a castle... Enough to give your friends fomo and make your enemies friends.

IMPORTANT: HOTEL TEMPORARILY CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC DUE TO COVID-19
We look forward to welcoming you back again very soon…

Boy, when you think wild Wales do you think castles! It’s not surprising really (given its history), but you may not think of staying in a castle, no, which is exactly what we’re talking about here. Staying… in a castle… Not any castle either – one that can trace its history all the way back to King Edward I of England, at the time it was known as ‘Castell Coch yn yr Gwernfor’ – the red castle in the great marsh. To this day, you can see the redness of its ivy-clad sandstone walls.

Ruthin stands watch (it’s a castle, after all) in 30 acres of private wooded grounds, overlooking the delightfully verdant Clwydian Range (AONB), North Wales – a short 30 minute drive from Snowdonia National Park. You can sleep like an overprivileged baby, sound in the knowledge that the famous military architect Master James of St George built its former twin-towered gatehouse and 6 round towers (1282 and 1295). That said, it’s a relatively new castle on a relatively old site (Cromwell’s troops demolished the old one), but some of Merlin’s original magic is still to be seen.

This former royal residence doesn’t need to mean airs and graces though. But, if it’s airs you’re after, then check-in to the stately Prince of Wales suite (notable guests include Prince Charles, of course) for that ‘Right away’ Downton experience. (O what a far cry from the hum-drum of everyday life!) We should probably tell you right off the bat, too – this castle has a woodland spa. We can practically hear your soul swoon, you ol’ romantic. Not to mention the peacocks. Plural.

King-size bed.We say: 'Bed chamber' doesn't do it justice - occupying the whole floor of a tower with antique furniture and a splendid, original wood-carved fireplace. Three large bay windows look out on to the castle and surrounding estate. The centrepiece of this 'bed chamber', however, must be the raised feature bed above which an iron chandelier hangs, and behind which is a decadent double-bath surrounded by mirrors.Accessible? Food & Drink

Bertie's Restaurant

Bertie was the name given fondly to King Edward VII by his family. For many years, Edward was a frequent guest at Ruthin Castle and a lover of its fine food and wine. So it's only right, nay proper that Ruthin keeps its reputation for epicurean dining well in to the 21st Century. Expect resplendent chandeliers, romantic nooks and a praise-worthy Sunday roast.

Library Bar

Its perennial appeal is in its name. (Like Batman and Robin. Only books and booze.) We should say no more, but... oak-panelled bookcases and leather Chesterfields. The library bar offers a relaxed menu and afternoon tea, which can be enjoyed on the terrace in the summer months.

Spa & Health

Bazaar Spa

Ruthin's woods must be enchanted. Why it's the very stuff of fairy tales. A Welsh castle with a woodland spa. Think thermal cabins with steam and salt, rhassoul and hammam cleansing rituals, relaxation zones and yes, treatments by Decléor. What's more, the couple's treatment suite, copper bath, and woodland path – finishing at the spa's boot room and reception – makes every day a tranquil twos-day. (And they all lived happily ever after. The end.)

  • Aroma steam
  • Herbal sauna
  • Arabian rhassoul chamber
  • Turkish hammam suite
  • Relaxation room
  • 5 Treatment suites
  • Woodland boot room
  • Woodland walk

Fitness Studio

Relax in the spa. Then workout in the gym. There's a modest choice of cardio and weights equipment. Choose wisely.

The North Wales Way -

This national route (following the old trading route for 75 miles) takes in the medieval town of Ruthin, with its Craft Centre and Gaol. And then on to those big ol’ fortresses: Beaumaris, Caernarfon and the walled citadel of Conwy, together with Harlech, form a formidable UNESCO World Heritage site – Edward I’s ‘Iron Ring’ of world-class Welsh castles.
